About derm_ref
derm_ref is an in-development dermatology reference built for residents and medical students, with skin-of-color representation baked in as a first-class design axis — not a filter. The project integrates clinical, dermatopathology, and emergency content with point-of-care speed.
Status
This is an alpha scaffold. Content is unreviewed. Some images are served from a copyrighted local dataset (Tier 4 — dev-only) and will never ship to production. Real editorial content is being drafted for the 75 MVP conditions.
Principles
- Skin-of-color parity in every condition page by default — not a toggle.
- Clinicopathologic correlation integrated, not siloed.
- Named reviewers and visible review dates on every entry.
- Fast lookup at point of care, deep enough for study.
- Editorial trust: AI drafts, humans sign.
Data sources
- ISIC Archive (CC-BY subset, Imperial College London) — dermoscopy images for pigmented lesions and NMSC.
- Dermnet (Kaggle, dev-only) — copyrighted reference dataset used locally during drafting; never deployed.
- Planned: Wikimedia Commons, PubMed Central OA, Atlas Dermatologico (with permission), Skin of Color Society partnership, residency-program IRB-approved clinical photos.
Not medical advice
Content is educational. Not a substitute for clinical judgement. No patient data is stored on this site.
